What's your favorite book for summer reading? Is it a romance, thriller, mystery, or a good ghost story? I read ALL the time, but for me, July and August have been the top months for lazily hanging out on the deck, beach or by the pool with my nose in a good ghost mystery. I do indulge in a few romances from time to time, but if possible, they must include some murder or mayhem...Does that sound a little 'dark'? Oh, well, I'm beyond the age of reading romances with sugary, happy endings...I know the truth...<evil smile. Just kidding.
I will admit, though, that I am reading one of the top romantic trilogies of the summer at the moment. I'm right there with a million others who can't put it down and would be entering a "gray" area if I tell you the name of the book. So I'll let you guess. Really, it's not hard, I gave you a hint!
My own romance is still going strong after almost 40 years! My husband and I just renewed our vows for our 36th anniversary. (You can tell a guy loves you when he goes along with a vow renewal...smile.) It was a special evening with wonderful friends and relatives we will never forget...and yes...the ceremony was romantic.
Heck! Nothing wrong with a little romance from time to time, right?
Romance novels keep the hope that there are knights-in-shining-armor that will ride up to you one day and sweep you off your aching, over-worked feet to a mansion fit for a queen, along with a maid, chaeffeur, personal trainer, and trips on a personal jet to Paris on a whim. Don't you just love a good fantasy?
I would be happy if my husband simply drove up beside me in our Taurus, holding Chinese take-out, with a promise of a possible foot rub later in the evening (if he doesn't fall asleep first), and a trip to the local food club for free samples! I'm easy. (He's asked that I not repeat that phrase too often in front of strangers).
I would never "knock" a romance book or it's reader, since I am admittedly, sometimes smitten by at least one romance novel during the warm rays of summer sunshine; as mentioned above. But give me a great who-done-it with a strong heroine nabbing the bad guy while ALSO exorcising a few ghosts in a haunted bed and breakfast and you've got me...in any season!
